The book, Humphrey's Family in America, by Dr. Frederick Humphrey, was published in 1883. It contains
a wealth of data about the family of Michael Humphrey of Lyme Regis, Dorset, England. He immigrated
circa 1642 to Simsbury Connecticut, where he settled, and prospered as an active & responsible citizen.
This book has very well-authenticated data based on birth, baptism, marriage, burial and probate records
from New England, and it's the source of the data on our Humphrey family in America from 1643 till 1883.
From 1883 to the present we have records from Correll Myron Humphrey's family.
As a preface to the following details, we're pursuing the possibility that the Michael Humphrey family of
Lyme Regis in the late 1500's & early 1600's may have immigrated from Northern France in the early or
mid 1500's. This is a subject of ongoing research.

Until recently, we've considered 2 possible sets of parents for Michael of Lyme Regis: Michael & Susannah
of Lyme Regis, and Samuel & Susannah of Essex & Lyme Regis. Records are spotty for Lyme Regis and
ambiguities remain. However, earlier theories that Michael's father was named Samuel were largely based
on a letter written in 1648 to Michael, ostensibly from his mother & father, Susannah & Samuel. Close reading
of this letter reveals that it was written by his mother & signed for a Samuel & Mary, possibly siblings - there
are records of these siblings and the dates are consistent.
In March, 2004, we obtained a copy of a christening record of Michael Humphrey of Honiton, Devon, which is
15 miles NW of Lyme Regis, 1/31/1577. There are several IGI records indicating that this Michael is the
father of our Michael of Lyme Regis. We're currently pursuing documentation of this allegation.
There are many letters between Michael & Samuel, his brother in St Malo France in the 1660's & 1670's, too
late for this Samuel to be his father. It's seems more consistent to assume that Samuel was his brother, and
that his father, Michael had passed away before 1648, and his mother had signed the letter for Samuel, who
was still living at home at the age then of 17.
