Child(ren):
Anna Heine (1834-1910) arrived in Nelson from Germany with her family onher 9th birthday, July 7th 1843, as Anna Bensemann.
Anna's family was one of six German families who settled near the mouth of the Waimea River, an area known as Ranzau.
Anna's father Cordt Bensemann found work at the Port breaking up the wreck of the Fifeshire. Although only a young girl, Anna kept house for her father in Nelson during the week. She and her father would walk the 15 miles along the coast, leaving Ranzau on Monday morning and returning on Saturday evening.
In 1849 Anna married Pastor Johann Heine, a close friend of her father's and twenty years her senior. After living at Ranzau they moved to Upper Moutere (known as Sarau) in 1853. Their large house was also used for school lessons and church services until a church was built at Sarau. As well as their own large family, the Heines often had school pupils staying at the house with them, sometimes for months at a time.
Anna was known in the district for visiting the sick and elderly, and her standing in the community is shown by the fact that the church bell at St Paul's Church at Upper Moutere, purchased in 1869 and cast in Germany, was named Anna after her.
