He was born in Kepno, Wlkp., Poland , a town in the Poznan, Wlkp., Poland district, into a poor Jewish family. Today Kepno, Wlkp., Poland is Kempno in Poland. He studied at the university of Wroclaw, Silesia, Poland and afterwards worked at the State Archive in the city of Poznan, Wlkp., Poland . He worked there from 1903 to 1912, when he became Director of the National Archives in Danzig. During World War I he was deployed by the German government to serve as an archivist in Warsaw. After the war he went to Berlin, Berlin, Brandenburg, Germany, where he was secretary of the Ministry of Culture. In 1921, he Retired. Throughout his career and after, he worked heavily on the genealogy of both Jews and non-Jews in his "homeland" of Poznan, Wlkp., Poland . He published both books and scholarly articles on the subject, most if not all of which can be found in the holdings of the Leo Baeck Beck Institute today.
Warchauer was born in Kepno as the son of Teacher and Cantoer, Berhard Warschauer. He attended high school in Wroclaw, and then studied archiving, history and philosophy there. From 1882, he worked at the State Archives in Poznan, he was a secret archival councilor. He was an outstanding expert in the history of Poland, in particular in Posen. He initiated the creation of the Historical Society of the Province of Poznan (German: Historische Society for die Provinz Posen). From 1903, he lectured at the Royal Academy in Poznan. In 1912, Warschauer was appointed director of the State Archives in Danzig. He was the first Jew to become the director of the Prussian state archive.
