Stevensweert

Stevensweert kreeg zijn bekendheid als vestingstadje en haalde de wereldpers toen in 1942 tijdens baggerwerkzaamheden in een van de grindgaten de Kantha­ros, een Grieks/Romeinse zilveren drinkbeker uit de eerste eeuw na Christus gevon­den werd.

Na vele jaren werd Stevensweert uiteindelijk een Spaanse vesting. De ligging vlak aan de Maas was een strategische waarde. In 1633 werd de vesting versterkt tot en met 1702. Daarna werd de ves­ting belegerd en tijdens de Spaanse successieoorlog, moesten de Spanjaarden zich overge­ven. In 1715 gaat Stevensweert offi­cieel over naar de Staten Generaal van de Nederlan­den. Het garnizoen dat in Stevensweert gelegerd werd in 1765 opgeheven.
