H.J. Scheffer (1977) had een grote belangstelling voor sterekunde. Hij beschikte over de gave om ingewikkelde sterrekundige processen op een populaire en aanschouwelijke wijze uit te leggen.

Opa eend stopte het zoeken naar de vader van Joseph Scheffer (1743, Duitsland) omdat die mogelijk iets op zijn kerfstok had. De redenering was ongeveer volgt:
Deze Pieter Scheffer uit Conincksbergen monsterde aan als soldaat op de "Meerlust', varend op Batavia. In die tijd werd dat kennelijk ook gedaan door mensen die iets op hun kerfstol hadden en Herbert Jacob stopte de geneaologische zoektocht. Zie brief uit Rijksarchief van 9 aug. 1917 (Nr 161).

Door kleindochter Francien werd hij opa eend genoemd vanwege na het herhaaldelijk samen met haar voeren van de eendjes in een -Haarlemse- gracht waar hij woonde.
