Ubbo, opgeleid als steenhouwer (restauratiewerk aan de Sint Jan in Den Bosch) werkt zijn hele leven als zelfstandig beeldhouwer. Een hoogtepunt in zijn carriere zijn onder andere 'Het Strijkwartet', een uit zandsteen gehouwen verbeelding van vier strijkers, onder meer genspireerd op (contacten met) het toendertijd beroemde 'Hongaars strijkwartet'. Het is nog steeds te bewonderen in de Amsterdamse stadsschouwburg.
