Notes about Joseph Scheffer

Volgens een brief van zein klein-kleindochter moest hij zijn beide benen missen als gevolg van verwondingen in de slag bji de Doggersbank. Hij werd daarna aanggesteld als notaris in Hoorn van 1801 t/m 1817 (zie stempelafdrukken). Hij deed de eed op 26 mei 1801 in handen van de Raad Willem Noodh en op 4 juli 1801 voor committee van algemeen welzijn te Hoorn. Naar verluid stond Joseph bekend als "de notaris met de blikken benen".

In het archief van de VOC wordt melding gemaakt van de reis van ene Joseph Scheffer naar Batavia. Joseph zou dan 15 jaar geweest moeten zijn:
