    Hertog de Winter werd op 18 juni 1867 geboren in het Noord-Brabantse Veghel in een Joods gezin met 13 kinderen. Vader Israel (Rossum 4-5-1827) en moeder Regina de Jongh (Veghel 27-7-1832) woonden met hun grote gezin aan de Heuvelstraat A417, als in 1882 Israel overlijdt. In mei 1887 moet Hertog in dienst. Er wordt dan opgetekend dat hij 1,65 m lang is, zwart haar heeft en een lang gezicht met laag voorhoofd. Na zijn diensttijd werd hij veehandelaar en slager. Als in 1900 zijn moeder sterft, wordt hij het hoofd van het gezin. Op 9 september 1903 trouwde hij met de eveneens Joodse Johanna Hertog uit het Limburgse Meersen (29 -6-1878). Pas op 24 oktober 1903 arriveert zij in Veghel. Aan de Heuvelstraat A397 (later omgenummerd tot 16) stichten ze hun eigen gezin. Op 21 juli 1904 bevalt Johanna van een doodgeboren jongetje, maar daarna worden achtereenvolgens geboren: Ies (1905), Selma (1907) en Jules (1908). In 1921 krijgen ze een nakomertje: Gien. Sinds 1 augustus 1932 kwam Hertog voor in het Meldebestand van leden van de Joodsche gemeente in Veghel

    Een Sperre is een tijdelijk uitstel van transport in de vorm van een stempel in het persoonsbewijs. Als ouder van een kind werkzaam voor de Joodsche Raad had Hertog ook recht op een Sperre. Dochter Gien was namelijk werkzaam als stenotypiste voor het Secretariaat Westerbork van de Joodsche Raad. Hertog had Sperrenummer 18-94234.

    Toch zitten Hertog en Johanna nog geen jaar na zijn 75e verjaardag ver van Veghel ondergedoken: vanaf maart 1943 zitten in huis bij het jonge echtpaar Guurtje en H. Kleppe-Bakker, Herenstraat 39 te Hoorn.

    Tijdens de onderduik krijgt Hertog een beroerte. Daarom brengt Winnie Swart, de verloofde van zoon Jules, hem op 14 juni 1944 per trein naar het rusthuis van het echtpaar Köther-Hoogerwerf aan de Stadhouderskade 117 in Amsterdam. Daar werd hij ingeschreven onder de naam Bos. Op de kaart van de Joodsche Raad staat dat Hertog ziekelijk is, maar voor een oude man nog flink. Op 21 juni wordt Hertog de Winter in het rusthuis opgepakt. Het echtpaar Köther werd niet gearresteerd. Zij bleven stug volhouden dat ze hem alleen kenden als de heer Bos. Gelukkig voor hen geloofde de SD dat.

    Op 23 juni 1944 valt het Guurtje Kleppe-Bakker op dat er een vrouw langs haar huis loopt. Later die dag valt de SD binnen en dan is die vrouw er ook bij. Johanna wordt opgepakt. Guurtje en haar man worden niet gearresteerd, op voorwaarde dat zij binnen 14 dagen een ondergedoken Jood aangeven. Dat beloven ze, maar nog diezelfde dag duikt het echtpaar Kleppe onder.

    Johanna wordt per auto, waar haar net opgepakte dochter Selma en schoonzoon Hugo ook in blijken te zitten, naar Amsterdam gebracht. In de gevangenis aan de Weteringschans zien zij en Hertog elkaar weer terug.

    Het echtpaar kwam op 1 juli 1944 aan in Westerbork. Vandaar werden Hertog en Johanna overgebracht naar kamp Birkenau in Polen. Direct na hun aankomst op 6 september 1944 zijn ze allebei vergast.
