Note: !US statesman and sixth president (1825--9), born in Quincy, MA, the son of John and Abigail Adams. He studied at Harvard, and was admitted to the bar in 1790. Successively minister to The Hague, London, Lisbon, and Berlin, he was elected to the US Senate from Massachusetts (1803--6).In 1809 he became minister to St Petersburg, and from 1815 to 1817was minister at the court of St James. As secretary of state under President Monroe, he was alleged to be the real author of the Monroe Doctrine. He became president in 1825, but failed to win a second term,and was elected to the House of Representatives, where he became noted as a promoter of anti-slavery views.
