Notes about Henriëtte Catharina van Nassau

Henriëtte Catharina van Nassau (Den Haag, 10 februari 1637 – Slot Oranienbaum, 3 november 1708) was een dochter van stadhouder Frederik Hendrik en Amalia van Solms. Mede via haar stamt het huidige Nederlandse koningshuis af van Willem van Oranje.

Toen Henriëtte Catharina vijf jaar oud was, werd besloten dat zij later zou trouwen met de vier jaar oudere graaf Enno Lodewijk van Oost-Friesland. Zij verbrak deze verloving toen zij zeventien jaar oud was.

Charles Stuart vroeg om haar hand, maar haar moeder wees zijn verzoek af. Henriëtte Catharina was graag met hem getrouwd. Zijn brieven bewaarde zij haar leven lang en gingen na haar dood op eigen verzoek met haar het graf in.

Op 6 juli 1659 trouwde zij in Groningen met vorst Johan George II van Anhalt-Dessau (1627-1693), waardoor ze vorstin van Anhalt-Dessau werd. Dit is het enige vorstelijk huwelijk dat plaatsvond in Groningen.
