De Kruisbroedershof en naaste omgeving is een merkwaardige buurt met een geheel eigen sfeer, onstaan door de vestiging der Kruisheren, in Den Bosch meestal Kruisbroeders genoemd. In 1309 hadden zich aan de Verwersstraat enige jongemannen gevestigd met de bedoeling gezamelijk een godvruchtig leven te leiden. Zij noemden zich Bogarden en kunnen misschien het best getypeerd worden als mannelijke begijnen; het waren dan ook geen eigenlijke kloosterlingen. Het Oud Bogardenstraatje in de Verwerstraat herinnert nog aan hun verblijf aldaar. Zij verdienden de kost met weven. In 1439 namen zij de regel en de kleding aan van de Derde orde van St. Franciscus en werden daardoor kloosterlingen. Maar enkele van hun paters en broeders verlangden naar een strengere regel; uiteindelijk werden deze laatsten opgenomen in de orde der Kruisheren. Zo ontstond het ongewoon verschijnsel van twee kloosterorden in één klooster. Na 1469 hebben de Kruisheren tengevolge van onenigheid het Bogardenklooster verlaten: in genoemd jaar werd hen een ruim terrein bij de Sint Jorisstraat geschonken. Zij bouwden daar hun kapel en klooster. Die kapel bestaat nog altijd, het is het hoogkoor der tegenwoordige Sint Catharinakerk, zo genoemd naar de patrones der oorspronkelijke kloosterkapel. De naam Kruiskerk dankt zij aan die vroegere aanwezigheid der Kruisbroeders. In 1629 moesten deze laatsten Den Bosch verlaten, zij vestigden zich voorlopig in Schijndel. Met andere kloosterlingen en seculiere geestelijken bleven er ook, tegen de strenge plakkaten in, enige Kruisbroeders achter om in 't geheim de verboden kerkdiensten te houden.
