Notes about George Henderson

It seems he was asked to come from Scotland to Brighton to be the 1st Steam Valve Inspector for the LB & SCR in 1850. He handed the job on to his son James Thomas on his death in 1892. He subsequently handed the job on to his brother Joseph Henry in 1922. Joseph passed the job on to his son Charles James in 1935 when he retired. I understand that Charles James was still doing the job when LB & SCR was amalgamated into British Rail. So that job was only ever held by the Hendersons.
Resided at 10 Belmont Street at time of Marriage.
At his wedding, witnesses William and Jane Vine.
Worked on London,Brighton and South Coast Railway and was their first Safety Valve Inspector.
In 1871 he was working as a fitter for the LB & SC railway earning 6s 4d a day.
At 1891 he was still working there but as the Safety Valve Inspector but still only getting 6s 4d a day.
He was mentioned in the book 'The Sacred Band' which was published in 1946 but is now out of print. George helped to pioneer the Co-Op in Brighton and was a strong Trade Unionist.
