Married 3 Nov 1723 to Elizabeth Hill when the Shirley mansion construction was began as a gift from King Carter and was finished in 1738.
John Carter died 31 July 1742.
Elizabeth remarried to Browler Cocke and the plantation was inherited by Charles Carter, son of John and Elizabeth Carter at the time of Elizabeth's death in 1773.
