Notes about Gen. Robert Lewis

Born about 1607 (aged 28 on 13 July 1635). Came to Massachusetts Bay on the "Blessing" & settled in Salem. (On 13 July 1635, "Robert Lewes," aged 28, and "Eliz[abeth] Lewes," aged 22, were enrolled at London as passengers for New England on the Blessing). Died by 6 July 1644 (date of inventory). (The inventory gives his date of death as 4 May 1643, but other records show that he was alive at later dates.)
Married by 1635 Elizabeth _____. On 1 June 1641, "the wife of Rob[e]rt Lewes, for her dishonoring the name of God, was censured to be whipped."
There is no record for Robert Lewis in New England between 1635 and 1641. However, we are safe in assuming that the passenger of 1635 is identical with the Salem man, since the 1635 passenger was on the same ship with Richard Hollingsworth, and the Salem man worked for and at his death was a creditor of Hollingsworth.
Both Savage and Pope claim that Robert Lewis moved to Newbury, but no evidence has been found in support of these statements, and the continued association with Richard Hollingsworth and John Maddux indicates that he resided only in Salem. Pope also says that Lewis was a "proprietor in the new town, 1643," an undocumented assertion which may derive from the same misunderstanding.
