    Zaterdag 14 oktober 1944 geldt als een zwarte bladzijde in de geschiedenis van Zutphen. Tegen vier uur ‘s middags verschenen plotseling drie geallieerde squadrons bommenwerpers boven de stad. Amper tien minuten later was het vredige stadje aan de IJssel veranderd in een rampgebied. De Engelse en Franse vliegeniers hadden hun bommen niet alleen afgeworpen boven de IJsselbrug – zoals de bedoeling was – maar vooral ook boven de naastgelegen stadswijk. Deze misser kostte het leven aan ten minste honderd mensen en een veelvoud daarvan raakte gewond. Huizen en straten in de wijde omtrek lagen volledig in puin.
    Op die veertiende oktober 1944 stegen drie squadrons vliegtuigen op om vanuit Engeland een aanval uit te voeren op de IJsselbrug in zutphen met als doel de vernietiging van de brug. Een poging die bijna volledig mislukte. Want de bommen kwamen in een groot gebied terecht zoals o.a op de Havenstraat, de IJsselkade, de Stationsstraat, het Stationsplein, de Rozengracht, de apenstert, het Broederenkerkplein, de Berkelkade, de Barlheze, de Spiegelstraat en de Waterstraat en er kwam zelfs nog een bom, die niet ontplofte, terecht op een pand in de Kuiperstraat
