*De smoutzetter vervaardigde zetsel voor meer gecompliceerde objecten als handels-, reclame- en familiedrukwerk.
*De tabelzetter zette met de hand staat- en tabelwerk: formulieren, cijfertabellen, statistieken, kasboeken e.d.

Het was een eerzaam beroep, letterzetter. Deze moest nauwkeurig te werk gaan en goed kunnen lezen en daarmee was het zeker niet een van de minste beroepen die je kon uitvoeren. Het is niet direct te verwachten, maar het was niet een vak zonder risico’s. Dat had vooral te maken met de stoffen die vrijkwamen uit de inkt. Zo hing er in de drukkerijen veel loodstof in de lucht en het kwam regelmatig voor dat de werknemers hieraan overleden. Loodstof veroorzaakt allerlei nare klachten zoals:
Aantasting bloedvorming wat bloedarmoede kan veroorzaken en dat uit zich in vermoeidheid
Aantasting gladde spieren bloedvaten en darmen(darmkolieken)
Aantasting van het zenuwstelsel(hersenen) resulterend in hoofdpijn, depressie, paniekaanvallen, verminderde eetlust later ook verlammingen.
