Gummarus Walteriuszoon van Asch werd op 11 oktober 1646 te Lier, in de Parochie Sint Gummarus gedoopt. Doopgetuigen waren: Peter; Guiliam van Camp, Meter; Maria Strijpens. De ouders staan bij deze
doop ingeschreven als Wouter van Asch en Anna van Camp.

11 Oktober is de naamdag van Sint Gommaris en mogelijk werd deze zoon omdat zijn doop op elf oktober plaatsvond naar deze Rooms Katholieke
Heilige vernoemd. St. Gummarus. Schutsheilige van de stad LIer was in de achtste eeuw ridder bij Pepijn de Korte en leefde later als kluizenaar bij Lier. In het Vlaams is deze voornaam Goemare. ook
wel Gommert of Gomme.

Op ruim 20 jarige leeftijd verlaat Gummarus of Gommert van Asch zijn geboorteplaats Lier en vestigt zich te Stavenisse op het eiland Tholen in Zeeland. Waarom hij zijn gebo
ortestreek verliet en wat zijn beroep was is nog niet gevonden. Was hij misschien aangetrokken door de mogelijkheid van een broodwinning in de landbouw in de nog jonge in 1599 herdijkte polder Staveni
sse, of was hij een ambachtsman die het elders eens wilde proberen. We weten het niet. Wel weten we dat hij jaren in Stavenisse heeft gewoond. Hij trouwde er op 5 november 1672 als Gommert Wouterse va
n Asch, "Jonkman van Lier" met Aechtje Jans van Leuven. Zijn nog te Lier wonende ouders gingen uit geloofsovertuiging niet accoord met dit huwelijk van hun Katholieke zoon met een Protestantse, en wei
gerden op grond daarvan hun toestemming tot dit huwelijk.

Op 14 april 1674 werd Gommert van Asch als lidmaat van de Hervormde Kerk van Stavenisse aangenomen

In het doopregister werd hij verme
ld als Gummarus van Asch 11 oktober is de naamdag van Sint Gummaris en mogelijk dat hij daarom naar deze Schutsheilige van de stad Lier is vernoemd.
