Notes about Pieter Mijertsz Mossel

Mossel.

Een oud gereformeerd geslacht van zeelieden in Oost. De stamvader, Pieter Weijertsz Mossel, werd daar ca 1640 geboren. Misschien was hij een broer van Cornelis Meijertsz Koning, van w
ie de families Koning en Keijser afstammen (zie TG I en het schema Mossel op blz. 218). Zijn dochter Jantje werd de stammoeder van het geslacht Vlaming (TG I blz. 221). Alle Mossel's waren in de 18de
eeuw zeelieden, in het bijzonder kaagschippers. In de 19e eeuw nam hun aantal snel af. Uit die tijd was de boodschappenloper uit Oosterend Simon Cornelisz Mossel (1821-1895) een bekende figuur. De laa
tste Mossel's op Texel waren Neeltje en Jannetje Mossel (overleden resp. 1940 en 1948), dochters van Cornelis Cornelisz Mossel en Bregje Simons Hemelrijk (zie TG I blz. 296). In Enkhuizen woonde in de
17de eeuw een aanzienlijk geslacht Mossel, dat erfde van Texelse verwanten; een familierelatie met de Mossel's uit Oost is dus niet uitgesloten. De naam is mogelijk ontleend aan het beroep mosselviss
er en is in dit opzicht vergelijkbaar met Dogger en Salm.
