Polder Walenburg

Na octrooiverlening aan Daniel van Nieuwwaal en Jan van Noorden op 12 mei 1436 door Margaretha van Bourgondië, op 12 augustus 1436 bevestigd door Philips van Bourgondië, werd
een poging gewaagd om de zuid-oostelijke hoek van de Walenburger kwelder onder de naam Schalkwijkerpolder in te dijken. Een dijkrestant ten westen van de Waal, nog op de kaart (Het Open boek Texel) ge
tekend en in 1518 als zodanig genoemd, laat zien wat overbleef van deze poging. Op 4 augustus 1488 breidde keizer Maximiliaan het octrooi uit met de toevoeging van hoge gronden ten noorden van dit dij
krestant, de Harde Koog. Met de koop van buitendijkse gronden ten oosten van De Koog verkregen de nieuwe octrooihouders op 9 aug. 1503 een westelijk aanhechtingspunt om de afsluitdijk te kunnen leggen
, waarvan de kaart eveneens de resten aan weerszijden Iaat zien. De dijk werd doorbroken door de zware stormvloed van 27 september 1509, maar in 1510 en volgende jaren hersteld. Langdurige processen t
ussen de bedijkers en de polderbesturen van het ‘oude land’ van Texel werden in de jaren 1518 tot 1533 tot in hoogste instantie, de Grote Raad te Mechelen gevoerd. Tijdens de stormvloed van 2 nove
mber 1532, nog voor de laatste en definitieve uitspraak van de Grote Raad van 22 maart 1533, sloeg de dijk weg en ging de polder verloren; hij bleef ‘rijdende’ tot 1612. Op 14 maart van dat jaar w
erd een nieuw octrooi gegeven, waarna een definitieve bedijking tot stand kwam.
