At age 17 he went off to the Spanish American war. (Date ofwar: April - August 1898. If he was 17 in 1898, he likely wasborn about 1881.) My grandmother belittled the exploits of heruncle by often repeating that he spent the war in Florida, though two sources reported that he did go to Cuba. (Maybe hegot to Cuba after the fighting was over?) He did have a brushwith danger when, in one of those places, he woke up one daywith a rattlesnake on his chest. He became a member of theNetherlands Reformed Congregation on Mar. 16, 1911, the churchwhere his father had been pastor. He married Maartje (Mary) VanDen Handel who had become a member of the NRC April 19, 1899. Hehad the reputation of being somewhat wild as a youth and drivinghis wife to drink. No children. Rev. Housewardinherited Uncle John's two war medals, one for the SpanishAmerican War 1898 and the other for the Spanish American war1898-1902 which includes Philippine Island, Cuba, Puerto Ricoand USA.
