Notes about Sarah HOLLISTER

Sarah Hollister Benschoter Parents: Sarah was named for her mother, Sarah Hurlburt, who married Hubbard Hollister. Sarah and Hubbard and their family were early pioneers in Ohio. Siblings: Our Sarah had several siblings of which five are known--an older brother, Hubbard H., an older sister, Almariah A (Clemons), and three younger sisters: Urania (Chase), Lavinna M (Libbey), and Pluma (Starks). Marriage: Sarah's father died in 1823, but her mother thrived until 1864, living long enough to see our Sarah falling in love and marrying Milo Benschoter, then raising a family on a farm in Berlin township, and naming one of her sons, Hubbard Hollister Benschoter, after his deceased grandfather. Family: Sarah and Milo had five sons: Ralph, Dwight, Hubbard Hollister, Burgess and Oliver. Life, and Death Sarah's life was a short one, with her death coming at age 31, even considering the times and the environment of a roughly established frontier, and the hardscrabble life on a farm newly developed. She died on the farm five days after the birth of her son Oliver. In the biography of the Benschoter family, Concerning the Van Bunschoten or Van Benschoten family in America written by William Henry Van Benschoten in 1907, Sarah's life is recorded with her husband and family: "Milo VB [Van Benschoten] married Sarah Hollister. She died March 20, 1839, and he in May of the same year. Milo and his wife dying thus early little survives regarding them. "Milo's farm adjoined that of his brother Curtis, and the latter as guardian of the children, bargained with Theophilus Church to take this farm as compensation for the board and care of Burgess and Hubbard, and in addition to pay to Oliver Peake fifty dollars per annum for caring for the youngest child, Oliver. "Milo and Sarah died where they had lived in Berlin township. Where they were buried is now a cultivated field. No stones mark the spot and moralize on life." Remembrance: Sarah's surviving sons, Hubbard, Burgess and Oliver never forgot her, and their descendants continued to mark their heritage at family gatherings, in remembrance of Sarah. When her son Burgess died, his son Vernie knew and saw recorded on his father's death certificate, the name of his beloved mother, Sarah. Note: In grateful appreciation to Boyd Weber for creating this memorial and allowing me to create a biography of my great-great-great grandmother, Sarah.
