Douglas was born to Ida Cramer Clemons and Albert Bruno Tuma. He was named after Ida's younger brother Douglas Harrison Clemons who died at a young age at their home after an extended illness. Sadly after Douglas joined the Navy he died of appendicitis. He was survived by an older brother Albert Lawrence Tuma, and a younger brother Samuel Bear Dambach. His grandfather Phineas Harrison Clemons was a surgeon for the Union during the Civil War.
