    Die SS van Warwijk wurde 1909 von Maats, Feyenoord in den Niederlanden gebaut. Es war 99 m lang, 13,5 m breit, 7 m tief und verdrängte 3.040 Tonnen.

    Im März 1942 wurde das Schiff von seiner Besatzung in Tandjong Priok (Hafen von Jakarta) versenkt, als Blockade, um die einfallenden japanischen Schiffe am Einlaufen in den Hafen zu hindern. Nach der Invasion wurde die Van Warwijk wieder flott gemacht und dann von den Japanern repariert und in Harugiku (Harukiku) Maru umbenannt. Die Harugiku Maru wurde zu einem der als „Höllenschiffe“ bekannten Schiffe.

    Am 26. Juni 1944 transportierte die Harugiku Maru im Konvoi Gefangene von Belawan (Medan) nach Pekanbaru, als sie von einem der beiden Torpedos der HMS Truculent getroffen wurde. Das Schiff zerbrach dann in zwei Teile und sank innerhalb weniger Minuten.
