Neben Regionen wie Niedersachsen und Westfalen wanderten im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert auch Deutsche aus Hessen in die Niederlande aus. Der hier diskutierte Vorfahr der Familie stammte aus dem Dorf Arborn in Nassau-Diez im Süden des heutigen Landes Hessen. Diese Familie erschien dort zumindest ab dem Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts. Einige Vorfahren hatten dort öffentliche Positionen inne, wie Bürgermeister und Sheriff. Der Nachkomme der siebten Generation, Johan George Phaff (1745-1819), landete 1765 als Soldat im Dienst der Staatsarmee in den Niederlanden. Nach seiner Entlassung ließ er sich 1774 in Zierikzee nieder, wo er Hofbote und Küster wurde. Zusätzlich zu seinen umfangreichen Nachkommen enthält diese Veröffentlichung Hinweise auf verheiratete Familien wie Van Geijten und Hutchison.
