CEDAR POST UND BELLE CARLOW

Belle Carlow wurde am 30. November 1900 als Tochter von Albin D. und Mary Ann (Moraisey) Carlow geboren. Sie lebte mit ihren Eltern und ihrem Bruder Roy in dem Haus oben auf dem Gooch Hill an der Cooper Road. Belles Tochter Barbara, Witwe von Elbridge McArthur, lebt seit 2010 in diesem Haus. Belle musste nicht weit zur Schule gehen, denn sie erhielt ihre Ausbildung auf der anderen Straßenseite an der Cedar School.

Belle war von 1926 bis 1935 Postmeisterin des Cedar Post Office. Das Postamt befand sich in einem Raum, den ihr Vater aus dem Speisesaal gemacht hatte. Sie hatte einen Schreibtisch, an dem sie ihre Aufgaben als Postmeisterin erledigte.

Ralph Sadler von Cooper brachte die Post per Team drei Tage die Woche vom Grove Post Office auf Middle Ridge in Cooper. Laut einem „Bericht des Star Route Service“ von 1927 für November 1927 waren es 5,75 Meilen von Grove nach Cedar. Er lieferte die Post in diesem Monat dreizehn Mal aus und kam zwischen 2 und 2:30 Uhr nachmittags in Cedar an. Er verließ die Rückfahrt 30 Minuten später. Belle musste unter anderem bescheinigen, dass Ralph eine Person mit ausreichender Intelligenz war, um ... die Post ordnungsgemäß zu handhaben.…

Cedar diente den Menschen am Fuße des Gooch Hill, hauptsächlich Mitglieder der Familie Dwelley, bis hin zu George Flood's in Cooper. Belles Postamt war rund um die Uhr geöffnet. Als ich Belle fragte, wie sie den Job bekommen hat. Sie erzählte mir, jemand habe ihr die Stelle besorgt. Damals war die Post sehr politisch. Belles Vater war Republikaner, was wahrscheinlich ein Faktor war.

Nachdem das Postamt eingestellt worden war, arbeitete Belle für andere Familien, die McGlauflins von Charlotte, die Dwelleys von Meddybemps und die Crosbys von Cooper. Sie arbeitete auch in Calais im Gem Restaurant.

Als der Zweite Weltkrieg kam, zog sie nach Portland und arbeitete drei Jahre lang als Schweißerin in der Werft. Sie hatte dann einen Laden neben dem Haus auf Gooch Hill. Dieses Ladengebäude wurde in die Brooks Street in Calais verlegt, angebaut und einige Jahre lang als ihr Zuhause genutzt. Während dieser Zeit arbeitete Belle für Ware Knitters in Calais.

Und Belle fand in all diesen Jahren der Arbeit Zeit, zweimal zu heiraten, mit Walter Carlow und mit Almond Ireland, und zwei Kinder zu haben, Albert, der 1980 in Connecticut starb, und Barbara.

Belle lebte in den Palmer Lane Estates in Calais und leistete während ihrer Pensionierung ihre Zeit ehrenamtlich im Barnard's Nursing Home und acht Jahre lang in der Küche, in der sie lebte, um bei der Zubereitung von Mahlzeiten für Senioren zu helfen. Sie fertigte in ihrer Freizeit Puppen und Afghanen an. Sie kehrte in ihr Haus auf Gooch Hill zurück, um ihre letzten Jahre zu verbringen, und starb dort 2003.
