Notes about Marthe Naudin

Martha was a strong minded woman of very peculiar tastes — she never wore hair-powder or hoops — she was fond of expeditions in a small open boat, accompanied only by an old Swiss man-servant, when her delight was to set snares on the canal banks for little birds, bringing home her pockets full of dead birds; sometimes she would take duck or two in the sly but always paid the owner for them afterwards. She hated dogs and used to carry a long stick with an iron tip to defend herself against them, and a fierce dog flying at her, she rammed her stick down his throat and killed him on the spot. She carried on a business, on her own private account, with some relations at Bordeaux in French wine and Indian silks and Chintzes and if any of the latter were unsaleable on account of their ugliness, she made her daughters wear them. She had a very powerful voice and was very fond of singing but the only person who ever remained in the room during the performance was her brother George Naudin, who was quite deaf. She was considered handsome but her portrait does not appear to be of the opinion [De Nederlandsche Leeuw, jaargang 40 (1922) col. 287]
