    Jacob Meyer Mogroby werd in Damascus geboren (14 april 1870). Syrië was toen onderdeel van het Turkse ('Ottomaanse') Rijk. Zijn moeder overleed toen hij bijna 13 jaar was, zijn vader twee maanden voor zijn geboorte. Jacob werd opgevoed bij zijn oudste broer. De familienaam Mogroby is afgeleid van het Hebreeuwse woord ma'arab, dat 'westen' betekent en wellicht de 'de westelijke tempelmuur' aanduidt. Als jonge man emigreerde Jacob naar de Verenigde Staten, waar hij op 23 oktober 1895 het Amerikaanse staatsburgerschap verkreeg. Zijn US-paspoort zou in 1937 verlopen. Rond 1896 keerde hij terug naar Europa, waar hij in 1897 in Wenen trouwde met Taube (Toni) Goldstein, die oorspronkelijk afkomstig was uit 'Lemberg' ('Llow') in Galicië – toen Oostenrijks, daarna Pools en tegenwoordig Oekraïens. Het echtpaar ging op huwelijksreis naar Alexandrië, waar het eerste kind werd geboren, Mozes (1898).
    In Wenen werd Friederike geboren (1900), de andere zes kinderen in Amsterdam, waarheen het gezin in 1901 verhuisde. Vijf meisjes en een jongen, allen met bijbelse namen: Sara (1901), Abraham (1902), Rebecca (1904), Rachel (1906), Anna (1909) en Lea (1912). Jacob Meijer Mogroby was een vroom man en was actief in de Portugese synagoge. Hij had vele beroepen. In Amsterdam werkte hij onder meer als broodbezorger.
