    De Groot is als boerenzoon geboren in Havelte. Als jongetje van zeven jaar was hij al gebiologeerd door het tekenen van paarden. In Assen bezocht hij de catechisaties van Hajo Uden Meyboom. Hij studeerde scheikunde, later Nederlands en ging over op klassieke talen. Via het Hebreeuws kwam hij in aanraking met de bijbel en besloot hij om theologie te gaan studeren.

    Als schilder werkte hij onder de naam Edgorot, een letteromzetting van zijn naam. Hij schilderde landschappen, bloemen en portretten. Hij produceerde meer dan 1300 schilderijen, waarvan er vele in binnen- en buitenland zijn verkocht. In de hervormde Pancratiuskerk in het centrum van Emmen bracht hij raam- en muurschilderingen aan, die bij de restauratie weer zijn verdwenen.
