Hij was als communist actief in de Internationale Brigade gedurende de Spaanse Burgeroorlog, en vanwege deze activiteit verloor hij zijn Nederlandse staatburgerschap. In 1941 (niet zeker) keerde hij terug naar Nederland in het geheim, maar was verraden en was gearresteerd en vervollengs gezonden naar concentratie kampen ondermeer Neuengamme.
Denijs van Roijen overleed op 3 Mei 1945 gedurende de beschieting en zinking van het gevangenschip Cap Arcona
