Leendert Overduin werd op 22 december 1900 te Leiden geboren als het zesde kind van Jacobus Overduin en Maartje Colijn. Hij overleed op 17 juli 1976 te Enschede. Leendert Overduin was een late roeping, toen hij, zevenendertig jaar oud, in Enschede het ambt van predikant aanvaardde. Zijn jongensjaren had hij doorgebracht te Leiden, waar hij net als zijn broers en zussen het zijne moest bijdragen tot het in stand houden van de textielwinkel waarvan het gezin Overduin leefde.

Vader Jacobus Overduin, een sterk sociaal voelend mens, geen zakenman, was organist van de christelijk-gereformeerde kerk in zijn woonplaats, maar geen lid van die gemeente. De sfeer in het gezin van Jacobus Overduin en Maartje Colijn werd gekenmerkt door eigenzinnigheid, een sterk, op het geloof gebaseerd rechtvaardigheidsgevoel en afkeer van de hok-jesgeest die de samenleving in die jaren beheerste. Deze eigenschappen vonden het duidelijkst uitdrukking in de levens van hun kinderen: van Koos (de predikant), Jan (de auteur) en van Leendert, die in Twente samen met zijn zussen Maartje en Corrie de meest effectieve jodenhulporganisatie van bezet Nederland organiseerde.
