Binnen de Leidse afdeling lagen de krachtsverhoudingen tussen beide
richtingen ongeveer half om half, al was een overgrote meerderheid fel
gekant tegen het Deventer besluit. Velen keerden de SDXP de rug toe
onder wie het grootste deel van het kader - en werden lid van de nieuwe
partij: de SDP. Behalve Knuttel namen dr. Dirk A. van Eek (die vanaf 1906
tot februari lOO!l het voorzitterschap van de Leidse SDAP-afdeling had
bekleed) en de sigarenhandelaar Willem C. Hemerik - op dat moment
secretaris van de LBB - deel aan de landelijke oprichting van de SDP in
Amsterdam. Over het verloop van de strijd in Leiden hield Knuttel de
lezers van De Tribune regelmatig op de hoogte.
