Ze kwamen aan in Quebec waar ze overstapten op de trein om hun reis te vervolgen. Ze waren op weg naar Lethbridge, Alberta, maar toen ze in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, aankwamen moesten ze uit de trein. Ze hadden geen andere keus dan te blijven in Manitoba omdat de regering meer immigranten in de prairie provincies wilde hebben. Hoewel Maria Cornelia (Ria) al een aardig woordje Engels sprak, was het algemene ontbreken van kennis van de Engelse taal ook een behoorlijk nadeel.
Zij schreven hun naam voortaan als VandenHaak.
