De soldaat Blankenstijn werd bij KB van mei 1946 postuum het Bronzen Kruis toegekend, met als considerans: "Heeft zich door moedig optreden tegenover den vijand onderscheiden, door als helper bij den zwaren mitrailleur in Kazemat B 5 in het gevechtbij Wessem aan de Maas op 10 mei 1940 - toen de kazematcommandant was gesneuveld - onder 's vijands artilleriebeschieting en ondanks talrijke voltreffers op de kazemat de verdediging voort te zetten en den vijand verliezen toe te brengen totdat een voltreffer hem ernstig verwondde. Is later aan zijn verwondingen overleden.
