Graaf van Avesnes.Subdiaken en Tresorier van Doornik. Wordt door de Graaf van Vlaanderen (Ferrand van Portugal) aangesteld tot Hoogbaljuw van Henegouwen (1212-1213), en door Ferrand bevestigt tot Leenman van Estroeungt. Neemt aan Vlaamdse zijde deel aan de Slag van Bouvines (27-7-1214) wordt gevangen genomen, maar weet te ontsnappen. Hij begeeft zich na dit avontuur naar zijn neef in Houffalize, waar hij 6 jaar zou verblijven. Wordt van 1215 regelmatig door de Pausen Innocentius III en Honorius, na klachten van z'n schoonzus Gravin Johanna van Vlaanderen in de ban gedaan. Deed enige invallen in Henegouwen, bij één ervan werd hij weer gevangen genomen (1219) en uitgeleverd aan z'n schoonzus, die hem tot 1221 gevangen houdt. Begeeft zich in 1222 naar Rome om z'n positie en huwelijk te redden, maar moet bij terugkeer in de tweede helft van 1224 ontdekken, dat z'n vrouw inmiddels is hertrouwd met Guillaume van Dampiëre.
