Notes about Wilhelmus Johannes "Jan" Essink

Jan Essink is de natuurlijke zoon van Ruben Philip en Aleida Gesiena (Leideke) Essink. In de negentiende eeuw en de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw stond in Groenlo aan de Ganzenmarkt de joodse slagerij Philip. Een van de zonen Philip heette Ruben, een hardwerkende slagerszoon. De familie Philip had niet alleen de slagerij met een slachthuis achter het huis maar op den duur werd het ook een exportslachterij. Ruben werkte bijna dag en nacht. Zo kwam het dat hij al een eind in de dertig was en nog geen Joodse trouwlustige vrouw ontmoet had. Nu grensde de grote tuin van de familie Philip aan de achtertuintjes van de huisjes in de Kloosterstraat waar Leideke Essink met haar ouders woonde. Leideke en Ruben werden verliefd en Leideke raakte zwanger van Ruben. Ruben was joods en Leideke katholiek. Zij mochten van de katholieke kerk echter niet met elkaar trouwen. Toen Leideke zwanger was, is Ruben door bemiddeling van zijn moeder getrouwd met Rosina Aptroot. Ruben Philip is op 28 mei 1943 gestorven in het vernietigingskamp Sobibór. Jan Essink heeft vier halfbroers. Alleen Hartog (Harry) Philip, de oudste halfbroer van Jan Essink overleefde de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Harry schreef een boek over zijn leven in Groenlo met de titel 'Just Call Me Harry'.
