Dieppe is a Canadian city in Westmorland County, New Brunswick. It is New Brunswick's fourth-most-populous city with a history and identity that goes back to the eighteenth century. It was first incorporated as a town in 1952 and designated as a city in 2003. Its namesake comes from a commune in the Seine-Maritime department, a port on the English Channel, in France and was adopted by the citizens of the area to commemorate the Second World War's Operation Jubilee, the Dieppe Raid of 1942. The City of Dieppe is officially a francophone city, although about three-quarters of the city's population speaks both English and French. Linguistically it is predominantly French-speaking (73.8%) of mostly Acadian French roots with a regional accent in which is unique to southeast New Brunswick. Regardless of language, however, a large majority of Dieppe’s population were in favour of the by-law regulating the use of external commercial signs in both official languages, which is a first for the province of New Brunswick. Dieppe is the largest majority-francophone city in Canada outside Québec (There are higher numbers of francophones in other Canadian cities, but French speakers in these cities are a minority). It was one of the co-host communities of the first Congrès Mondial Acadien (Acadian World Congress) which was held in Moncton in 1994. The City of Dieppe proper had an estimated population of 23,310 (CSd) in 2011 with a 25.6% growth rate from 2006 to 2011. The City of Dieppe is part of the Greater Moncton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), which includes 14 census subdivisions (CSd), and is New Brunswick's most populous with an estimated population of 138,644, according to the 2011 census.
