Rome is an unincorporated community in Malheur County, Oregon, United States, part of the Ontario, OR–ID Micropolitan Statistical Area. In the sparsely populated high desert of southeastern Oregon, Rome is immediately west of the Owyhee River on US-95, approximately 12 miles (20 km) northeast of Burns Junction. The elevation of Rome is 3390 feet (1033 m) above sea level. Rome was named for some peculiar geologic formations that suggested the ruined temples of Rome, Italy. The 100-foot-high (30 m) Rome Cliffs, or "Pillars of Rome" are formations of fossil-bearing clay, measuring about five miles (8 km) long and two miles (3 km) wide.
