Atkinson is an incorporated town in Henry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 972 at the 2010 census, down from 1,001 at the 2000 census. According to the Friday, August 12, 2011 online edition of the Peoria Journal Star by Deanna Bellandi of the Associated Press, President Barack Obama, who worked and lived in Chicago, Illinois, will visit Atkinson during a three-state bus tour of the Midwest focusing on jobs, the state of the economy, and the housing market in a campaign-style event. Residents of the Republican-leaning county have assured him of a good welcome despite short notice. President Obama will also visit Alpha, Illinois, and the states of Iowa and Minnesota.
