Dewlish is a village in the English county of Dorset. It is situated in the West Dorset administrative district of the county, about seven miles north-east of the county town of Dorchester. It is sited in the valley of the small Devil's Brook, amongst the chalk hills of the Dorset Downs. The surrounding area is part of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The village has a population of 254 (2001). In the nineteenth century the remains of two prehistoric mammoths, dating from about one million years BC, were found in the hillside above the village; two of the tusks were taken to the county museum at Dorchester. There was once a Roman villa on the site of Dewlish, and in 1740 a Roman tessellated pavement was discovered in the village. Dewlish was also the main part of the Liberty of the same name, including Dewlish itself and a part of Milborne St Andrew.
