A 28 miles south-east drive down the A606 from Nottingham, 25 miles drive east from Leicester, 23 miles drive west from Peterborough, Oakham has a total resident population of 9,975. It has a variety of shops and a museum. Oakham, which has civil parish status, lies to the west of Rutland Water, one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe.
