His father, Dr. Walter McClurg, a native of Wigtownshire, Scotland, was a surgeon in the British Royal Navy & an expert on smallpox & was sent to Hampton, VA in 1720 specifically to deal with an epidemic of smallpox that had broken out there.
Dr. McClurg was killed at Richmond on the above date, when his horses ran away with his carriage causing an accident that led to his death. Obituary appeared in the Richmond, VA Enquirer on 11 Jul 1823. He had no living male heirs, the male line ended.
