Notes about Ernst Otto Theodor Westerlund

Ernst Westerlund was the fourth of five children of the parish priest in Öregrund Per Vilhelm Westerlund (1800–1854) and his wife Johanna Maria Sundeman (1801–1868). When Westerlund was nine years old, he started at the Cathedral School in Uppsala and then lived in a school household with his brother. When the father died in 1854 and the estate was then declared bankrupt, Ernst Westerlund had to take care of his mother at the same time as he was to finance his studies. His brothers had previously died of disease and accidents. At the age of 16, Westerlund became an informant for the younger children in the Floderus family on the estate Halmbyboda in Funbo parish. There he met his wife Nina Floderus.ee in medicine in 1863 and a licentiate degree in medicine in 1867. During his studies he had been particularly interested in gynecology and surgery.ar in 1864 as a volunteer assistant physician at Augustenborg's hospital on the island of Als . He was captured but released after three days. The military interested him all his life and he became second battalion doctor at Uppland's regiment in 1870, regimental doctor at the Life Regiment's dragoons 1888–1895 and 1899–1900 and distribution doctor at the 5th Army Division 1895–1900. began his practice, Westerlund only had patients from Enköping but soon they came from all over the country. It is said that he became famous after a successful gynecological operation, but it was as a neurologist that he became really famous. Westerlund cured patients that other doctors had failed with and he had insights into mental illness ., Westerlund took care of them and took their suffering seriously. He understood the connection between body and soul. When the rumor of his treatments began to spread, patients came from all over the country but also from Finland , Norway , Denmark , Russia and several countries in Western Europe and all the way from South Africa .ination, he was able to quickly diagnose and determine treatment. He used regimen therapy , which means that he gave each patient a regimen , one (board, management, rule, governing) to live by. The treatment regimen began when the patient had to be in bed, often with a gödkur or slimming regime . Then each regime was very detailed: "We get up at 7 o'clock. We eat a French bread and a cup of tea for breakfast. Then we rest until 9 o'clock. We then go for a walk on the ridge ..." feel involved in the healing process. With his strong personality, he managed to strengthen the desire to get well. One of his slogans was We will be good, we are better already now! An important part of the therapy was obedience. Patients who did not listen were allowed to go home. He concentrated instead on those who wanted to get well. Westerlund did not write journals but kept everything in mind but could make notes in notebooks or almanacs.erus . Westerlund opened a private clinic. Many patients had to stay for a longer period of time and then lived in the city hotel , smaller nursing homes or on larger estates outside the city.und is also called the father of occupational therapy . Another language of choice was To rest is to do something else . One way to restore patients' health was to put them to work. He then wanted them to do something they really hated or had never done before. We must work, and not only that, we must work!ds and called him charlatan . But in the end, his methods won the recognition of the medical profession. In 1901 he was appointed honorary doctor of medicine at Lund University and in 1920 honorary doctor of theology at Uppsala University.ost 57 years, 1868–1886 as a city doctor and the following years as a private practitioner. His funeral was filled with people who wanted to say a final goodbye; several railway carriages brought flowers to Enköping.ea, called Dora. After the wedding , the couple moved to Russia and had ten children, eight of whom reached adulthood.
