La dernière descendante de la famille de La Marck, la comtesse Marguerite de La Mark et d'Arenberg, avait par son contrat de mariage avec Jean de Ligne, exigé que leurs descendants prennent le nom et les armes d'Arenberg. Elle obtint de l'empereur Maximilien II d'Autriche, lorsqu'elle était déjà veuve de Jean de Ligne, par lettres patentes en date du 5 mars 1576 à Vienne, pour elle et ses enfants le statut princier, transmissible à tous les descendants. C'est ainsi que son fils Charles, continua la lignée sous le nom de d'Arenberg et porta les armes d'Arenberg.
