Notes about Jean (Jean III) de Namur

N'ayant pas d'enfants légitimes mais un besoin urgent d'argent le comte vendit son territoire à Philippe le Bon de Bourgogne pour la somme de 132.000 couronnes d'or. Il conserva la souveraineté du comté jusqu'à sa mort.
En 1420, il donna son domaine de Dhuy à son fils naturel, Philippe de Namur. La donation comportait la seigneurie de Bayard et la Tour de Dhuy relevant du Duc de Brabant. Il reçut l'année suivante du seigneur de Thy-le-Château, le Sart de Dhuy. La terre de Dhuy resta en fief aux de Namur jusqu'à la Révolution Française.
Jean était bien décidé à rendre à sa parente, en l'épousant, l'honneur qu'il lui avait ôté; mais jamais l'évêque de Liège ne voulut accorder la dispense que demandait la proximité du sang qui était entre le comte et cette dame. Elle mourut en couches, avant qu'on eut pu obtenir cette dispense du pape.
