They got married on March 19, 1846 at Leeuwarderadeel, Friesland, Nederland , he was 21 years old.
Tjeerd and Syke Heemstra immigrated to America with their church congregation from Friesland, The Netherlands, on the ship Vesta arriving in New York in June 1847. Their migration route to Michigan is believed to be as follows: New York, Hudson River, Albany, Erie Canal, Buffalo, Lake Erie, Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, St. Clair River, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Black Lake, Holland, MI.
They settled in Holland with the Van Raalte group, staying there until about 1854 at which time they moved to Kalamazoo, MI. In 1856 they relocated to the Vriesland, MI, area where they lived until April 1870.
In April 1870 they sold their last piece of land in Vriesland, MI, and traveled to Pella, Iowa, having decided to join the new colony in northwest Iowa that the Pella Dutch were establishing. Tjeerd appeared in court in Knoxville, Iowa, (just outside of Pella, Iowa) and applied for a homestead in Sioux County, IA. During the week of April 23, 1870, he left Pella to relocate to what would become Orange City, Iowa. He arrived in Le Mars on May 3, 1870. It was shortly after that, that Tjeerd collected the needed supplies and headed up to his land in Sioux County. He was one of the first Dutchmen on the land.
He was the son of Fokke Tjeerds Heemstra and Berber Hoekstra; he was an only child. He married Sijke Hoesktra on 19 Mar 1846 in Hijum, Leeuwarderadeel, Friesland, Netherland. They were the parents of 11 children, an unnamed infant died in 1847/48. He and his wife lived the rest of their lives in the Orange City, Iowa, area.
