de praktijk, om te beginnen met het timmeren van kippenhokken en andere
kleine gebouwtjes. Later metselde hij met Job kleine aanbouwtjes en
geleidelijk groeiden deze werkzaamheden uit tot het bouwen van schuren en
huizen. Ondertussen volgde Gerrit Jan een avondcursus voor het vakdiploma
aannemer. Als het in de winter wat rustig was in de bouw, gingen Gerrit
Jan en Jacob ook wel slachten bij de boeren.
