Notes about Hendrik Pul

Beroep: dagloner

Hendrik, listed as a day laborer and member of the Dutch Reformed Church, emigrated with his wife Dirkje and ten children in 1868. Seven of the children died on the boat, possibly from a disease epidemic, and an eighth child died upon arrival of an "open back" (possibly tuberculosis or spina bifida), leaving only Mary and Tim alive.

The family settled south of Zeeland, MI, owning 15 acres in 1876. By 1880, the farm consisted of 40 acres (valued at about $1500, plus $200 of livestock), including 1 horse, 3 cows, 3 calves, 3 pigs, and 40 hens. They grew wheat, corn, and potatoes. The farm grew to a scattered 58 acres by 1897 (map of farm).

Hendrik is buried in New Groningen Cemetery (Sect B, B18 L5) in Holland, MI.

{Het verhaal van de tien kinderen kan niet kloppen. Bij de emigratie in 1868 waren er 6 kinderen geboren, waarvan twee levenloos. De reis kan dus hoogstens met 4 kinderen gemaakt zijn. Mogelijk was Dirkje zwanger en beviel ze tijdens de bootreis. Dit zou dan het kind met spina bifida kunnen zijn (hoewel dat ook voor zoon Aalt zou kunnen gelden, van wie verder niets bekend is.}
