'In Loving Memory of Mabel Elizabeth Dena Dirks

Mabel Dirks was born on May 24, 1922 on a farm in Nobles County, Minesota, south of Fulda, to John and Sadie Basche Sandhurst. She grew up on the family farms near Iona and Dundee and attended county school. She took care of her motheruntil the time of her marriage. On August 3, 1942 she and George Dirks were married at Immanuel American Lutheran Church at rural Fulda. They farmed near Iona and then near Fulda before moving to Norcross, MN. They farmed there for acouple of years and then in 1955 they moved to Lime Creek. Mabel worked at the Fulda Cafe and Kilbride Bakery. They moved to Avoca in 1960. Mabel worked in the laundry department of Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda for 25 years. Sheretired in 1987. She had been in failing health for the past two years and was hospitalized in Sioux Falls for two months. Mabel had moved to Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda one day before she passed away there on June 1, 2000 at theage of 78. She was a member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Avoca, belonged to WELCA and circle. Her favorite pastimes included gardening, flowers, reading and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, George of Avoca, two children and their spouses: Ron and Connie Dirks of Slayton and Darlene and Larry Betz of Avoca; five grandchildren: Stacy Pressley, Lisa Boynton, Jody Betz, Aaron Betz and Eugene Betz;two great-grandchildren: Danner and Bradley Pressley; and two brothers and their wives: Ed and Barb Sandhurst of Fulda, and Vince and Marlene Sandhurst of New Ulm, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Harold, Artand Les Sandhurst.

Funeral Services

Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church Avoca, MN on Saturday, June 3 2000 at 10:30 AM with the Rev. Joy Armstrong officiating. The organist is Nancy Lee Pierson. The pallbearers are nephews: Bob Sandhurst, Gary Sandhurst, LaVerne Sandhurst,Mark Sandhurst, Darrly Sandhurst and Steve Sandhurst. Interment is at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Avoca, MN' <>
