According to Farquar's book on Bowles, William Bowles emigrated to Africa.

There is a William Thomas Bowles who married Thysina Jemima Shelver 25 Aug 1879 at Chalumna, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. LDS ordinance 27 Aug 1980 SL 1260630 Batch 7933760 Sheet 87.

Mrs. Morgan writes, "I got the 1881 census index for UK and couldn't find either William or George Bowles, so it appears that Charles was the only one of the four brothers still in the UK. William was not in the Minster Lovell area in1861, so he may have already left the country by then.

Did I tell you that one of the UK cousins, Ken Bowles, died right before Christmas? He was the one with MS and cancer. ..."

Mrs. Morgan writes, "Hi David,

Hope everything is going well with you. I found this on the internet and since I think you were the one who said you had heard that Joseph Bowles' oldest brother had gone to Africa, I thought you might be interested.

William Bowles, age 19, farm laborer/servant, of Oxfordshire, left for South Africa aboard the Aurifera I in July 1858. This is from the book 'Aided Immigration from Britain to South Africa 1857-1876' by Esme Bull.

The age, time period, and occupation are right, plus one of the three recruiters was from Witney, which is only a couple miles from where our Bowleses were living, so I think there is a good chance this is our guy. ... Here is the link.

I was fortunate enough to come across the book 'Aided Immigration from Britain to South Africa 1857-1867' by Esme Bull (1991) at the PRO at Kew, which lists the British emigrants to South Africa in this time period.

I've extracted all the individuals who are listed as coming from Oxfordshire (though there may well be more Oxfordshire emigrants since the place of origin wasn't always given), in the hope that some of them may belong to people on thelist:
