"... Clark Reason: No primary source names him as Joseph. ... Great Migration explains. FRANCE'S FIRST HUSBAND, MR. CLARK, IS NOT KNOWN. SOME HAVE ASSUMED IT WAS JOSEPH CLARK, BUT A STUDY OF HIS FAMILY PROVES IT WAS NOT HIM. THEY ARE TWO DISTINCT FAMILIES. Joseph Clark's wife was unknown, she died a year after Frances married Thomas Dewey, Joseph died three years after Frances married Thomas Dewey. Great Migration under Joseph Clark, last Note states his wife was NOT Frances. Frances was only known as widow Frances Clark.

THIS Mr. Clark is NOT JOSEPH CLARK! MR. UNKNOWN CLARK AND JOSEPH CLARK ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON. While there are some published histories that have conflated the family of Joseph Clark with Frances' husband, there are no sources that actually name Frances' first husband. However, he was, most definitely, not this particular Joseph Clark since his family records overlap the records of the widow Frances Clark, and his children's records disprove the relationship. (See the family of Joseph Clark 1611-1641, KFP9-SSS )

The Great Migration under Joseph Clark, father of the Mary Clark who married Joseph Bird, specifically states his wife was not known. He also states in the last paragraph that Torrey untangled some problems with another Clark family--and determined that this Joseph Clark's wife was NOT FRANCES.

Great Migration states that Thomas Dewey married the widow Frances Clark (also supported in New England Marriages) in 1638. JOSEPH CLARK, the father of Joseph and Mary, orphans, lost his wife in 1639, and then he died in 1641--his daughter Mary married Bird. JOSEPH CLARK DIED THREE YEARS AFTER THE WIDOW FRANCES MARRIED THOMAS DEWEY.
